Our Mission
Why does the Free State Project exist? How does our liberty concentration strategy work? What can it mean for you?

The Free State Project’s mission is to build the world’s most effective movement for liberty by concentrating liberty-minded people in New Hampshire who will exert the fullest practical efforts to expand personal and economic freedom through activism, entrepreneurship, and mutual support.
How liberty concentration works?
The Free State Project began in 2001 as an attainable replacement the the Libertarian Party’s national strategy, which had failed to produce electoral victories over the previous three decades.
Noting that millions of libertarians were too dispersed to meaningfully impact politics and culture, FSP Founder Jason Sorens proposed a mass migration to concentrate libertarians in one small state.
By vote, early participants selected “Live Free or Die” New Hampshire as the best destination to augment its existing libertarian culture.
For over two decades, thousands have made the move to New Hampshire, joining native liberty lovers to build community, culture, and policy consistent with the values of individual human liberty.
What this means for you:
We are building a community where free people thrive for generations under libertarian principles of non-aggression and voluntarism through culture and politics. By concentrating in New Hampshire, we are laying the groundwork for a free society — one demonstrating that liberty leads to peace and prosperity.
The Free State Project began as a mass migration of more than 20,000 liberty-loving people pledging to move to New Hampshire, joining native Granite Staters who uphold the local “Live Free or Die” ethic.
Free Staters are neighborly, productive folks from all walks of life, of all ages, creeds, and colors. We are on a mission to build a homeland for liberty, peace, and prosperity. While those in New Hampshire are reaping the benefits of growing freedom, we are also setting an example for the rest of the world that liberty is the way to peace and prosperity.
About the Free State Project
The Free State Project is a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit organization, educating the public about the benefits of limited government and how they can best be achieved in New Hampshire. Curious? Meet our board, read our early history, or explore more!
The FSP is not a political action organization. It is not tied to any political party or organization; it does not run candidates for election; it does not financially support or endorse candidates; and it does not oppose or endorse legislation. All these things may be done by people in the state in whatever ways they choose, either individually or through local organizations. The FSP does not welcome anyone who promotes violence, racial hatred, or bigotry.
